Li Keran (1907-1989) , born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, was a famous Chinese painter. In 1923,he entered the Shanghai College of Fine Arts. And in 1929, at the age of 22 he enrolled in the National Art College in Hangzhou to further his study on painting as a research student. At that time he joined the "Eighteen Art Society",a progressive young artists’ society initiated and organized by Lu Xun.Li Keran once taught Chinese painting in Xuzhou Private Art College and in the National Art College in Chongqing. After liberation he traveled a lot to make sketches of real landscapes in nature. From 1954 he made about ten sketching tours which had taken him to almost all parts of China and brought about a great change in his painting style. He was extremely adept in painting landscape, ancient human figures and cattle in a freehand impressionistic manner. He was also good at calligraphy and devoted to the teaching of Chinese painting as he had done a lot of research work on the theory of Chinese painting.
He did an excellent job of combining the traditional with real life and to adapt ancient forms for presentday use. He also introduced the western painting technique of dealing with light and shade into Chinese painting and made the traditional Chinese ink and stroke even more impresive. He named his studio Shi Niou Tang ( It implies that the host will imitate and learn from cattle, symbol of diligence in China).Li Keran successively served as Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Artists’ Association and President of
the Chinese Painting Research Institute and so on.
